School Supply Drive and
Back 2 School Bash
Every child in America is entitled to a free quality education. Sadly they are not entitled to access to free school supplies and uniforms, which can be a looming expense for families living in poverty. During back to school season, many families are faced with the decision of purchasing school supplies or paying household bills.
We hope to help alleviate the stress of obtaining items necessary for a successful school year by making them more easily accessible to our community students.
Our annual School Supply Drive began in 2021, where we collected monetary and material school supply donations for our local public schools. During the 2021 drive, we were able to raise $600 for our supply fund, as well as collect two boxes of school supply donations. All money collected was used to purchase additional school supplies and we were able to provide a gift basket of school supplies and uniforms to all 10 Avoyelles district public schools.
In 2022, our approach was a little different. From June to July 2022, HHYC collected school supplies and monetary donations to disperse at our Back 2 School Bash on July 30th. The goal was to give each school-aged child present a backpack stocked with school supplies for the upcoming school year. Sadly, our Back 2 School Bash at Sarah Anne Memorial Park in Cottonport was cancelled due to inclement weather.
We did not let this delay stop us from getting quality school supplies to students in need though! Throughout the first week of August, students were able to come into our main office to receive a backpack. HHYC was able to giveaway 37 elementary and 32 high school backpacks, totaling 69 fully stocked backpacks for our local students!
